Another Game of Thrones Prequel Series in the Works at HBO

The Game of Thrones franchise may be expanding yet again, as sources close to HBO have confirmed that a new prequel series is in the early stages of development. While details are scarce at the moment, the potential project could include a feature film that would lead into the series, according to insiders.

The prequel will reportedly tell the story of Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, as they conquer six of the seven kingdoms on Westeros with their army and three dragons, with the exception of Dorne. Fans of the spin-off series House of the Dragon will recognize Aegon and Rhaenys, who were played by Tom Glynn-Carney and Eve Best, respectively.

Aegon I went on to become the first king of Westeros, the first to sit on the Iron Throne, and the founder of the Targaryen Dynasty, roughly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

HBO has had several Game of Thrones projects in development over the years, but the only one to make it to air so far has been House of the Dragon. The abandoned pilot about the Long Night starring Naomi Watts was ultimately scrapped in 2019, on the same day that House of the Dragon was greenlit.

While it’s still early days for this new prequel series, fans of the franchise will undoubtedly be excited to see what HBO has in store for them. Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses!
