In an interview with Total Film magazine, filmmaker James Gunn shared that the completion of Rocket’s story arc was his primary motivation for finishing the Marvel trilogy. According to Gunn, Rocket is the “secret protagonist” of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise and has always been the center of the story for him.
Gunn explained, “the most important thing for me was Rocket’s story, and then, following that, everybody else.” He added that he felt Rocket’s story needed to be told and was left hanging after the events of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Telling Rocket’s story is “the most important thing” about the third part, Gunn emphasized. However, he also noted that Vol. 3 will finish the ensemble cast’s story arc and can act as a standalone film.

“The first movie is about the mother, the second is about the father, and the third movie is about the self,” he said. “That’s what this journey is.”
